Colorado opens special health insurance enrollment period February 8

DENVER – Colorado reopens its Connect for Health Colorado healthcare exchange on February 8 so people can sign up for a healthcare plan until mid-May following an executive order from President Joe Biden.

The Biden administration’s executive order reopened registration in federal exchanges for the Affordable Care Act. Colorado, which uses his own exchange, decided to mirror the order and do the same, with a few small differences.

From February 8 to May 15, uninsured Colorado residents will be able to enroll in a health insurance plan anytime through Connect for Health Colorado. The exchange will reopen a week earlier than the special registration period on Federal Exchanges.

For people who purchase health insurance during the special period, coverage will take effect on the first day of the month following the date the insurance was selected – meaning someone who purchases insurance in February will see the coverage come into effect on March 1.

Almost 180,000 people signed up for a coverage plan through Connect for Health Colorado during the open enrollment period that ended Jan. 15, an 8% increase from the previous year. And thousands of people signed up during a special registration period last April at the start of the pandemic and trade restrictions.

The state said it welcomed the actions of the new administration and believed the special registration period in Colorado would help people who lost their employer-sponsored health insurance during the pandemic because they became unemployed.

“I am encouraged to see President Biden and his administration take action on this front, acknowledging the fact that so many people remain without health insurance due to the continued impact of COVID-19,” the Insurance Commissioner said. Colorado, Michael Conway, in a statement. “The Division of Insurance will work with Connect for Health Colorado to ensure this additional enrollment period works to help Coloradans be covered.”

Colorado residents can also purchase a plan at any time if they lose employer insurance, Health First Colorado coverage, or experience any other Qualified life event parameters.
