Japan starts using My Number card for health insurance

The Department of Health on Wednesday rolled out an online system to use My Number social security and tax identification cards as public health insurance cards.

The introduction of the online insurance eligibility confirmation system is part of the government’s efforts to promote the use of My Number cards.

The system is intended to simplify the reception procedures for holders of the My Number card and also to allow holders to consult their prescription books.

Meanwhile, medical establishments and pharmacies that use My Number cards as health insurance cards currently represent only about 8% of a total of some 230,000 such establishments across Japan.

The government, which aims for almost everyone in the country to get their My Number cards by the end of March 2023, is gradually expanding the scope of administrative services for which My Number cards can be used.

The government is also planning to integrate the My Number card into the driver’s license and to introduce the functions of the My Number card on smartphones.

Right now, the card possession rate is around 40%.

Those who wish to use My Number cards as health insurance cards must register for the system through the government website Mynaportal and other platforms.

When My Number cards are held on special card readers installed in medical facilities, the identity of patients can be verified using facial recognition technology. The system can simplify the procedures for verifying the eligibility of patients to use health insurance.

On the Mynaportal website, holders of the My Number card can consult their prescription books and the results of their health checks.

Doctors and pharmacists are also allowed to verify this data with the consent of patients.

The health ministry said the My Number cards will allow people to receive treatment and a prescription efficiently based on accurate data.

From November, My Number cardholders will also be able to view the medical bill statements they paid at the counter on the website.

More than 50% of medical establishments and pharmacies nationwide plan to start accepting My number cards as health insurance cards, but many of them were unable to introduce the system due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and shortages of semiconductors, which are used in necessary equipment. .

“Many establishments are adopting a wait-and-see attitude because it is still not known how many people would be using the system,” a health ministry official said, adding that it was difficult to get people to use the system because they can. always use their health. insurance cards.

The government is keen to see the system introduced to all medical facilities and pharmacies by the end of March 2023 and for people to know how to use My Number cards.
