In today’s competitive and changing labor market, organizations need to offer more than simple competitive salaries to recruit, attract and retain employees. Benefits are the second most important factor when employees consider different job offers, beyond salary and health benefits, they carry more weight than before – most employees believe this is a basic right. In reality, many employees (60-77 percent) said they would leave their current organization for an organization that offered them better support for their well-being (even with a lower salary).

Recommendations
Employees see all health benefits as a gesture of how an employer will treat them. This suggests that it is essential for employers to tailor health and wellness programs, not only to attract employees, but also to retain and keep them productive. By maximizing the value of their health and wellness supports, employers can reduce absenteeism, increase engagement and productivity, and foster a culture of wellness embraced by a new generation of employees.

To better meet the needs reported by employees, recommendations for Canadian employers include:

  1. Provide health benefits to all employees, including part-time workers;
  2. Considering the demographics of a company’s unique workforce, such as age, employee level, marital status, gender, etc. ;
  3. Increase communications to ensure that all employees are aware of all aspects of their health benefits program, especially mental health offerings;
  4. Communicate regularly with employees about benefit plans, including whether virtual health services are covered, how to access them, and the benefits of using these services to improve employee health and well-being (e.g. example, less commuting, a better work-life balance, asking for access to resources and support); and
  5. Enable employees to prioritize their mental and physical health needs by providing flexible work arrangements, including working from home, and access to high quality, preventive and compassionate health care.
