HARRISBURG, Pa .– Governor Tom Wolf announced that the 2022 open enrollment period for health care coverage through the Pennie, Pa., Health Insurance Market begins today.
âPennie is the one stop shop for Pennsylvanians’ health needs,â Governor Wolf said. âWith Pennie, Pennsylvanians have access to a variety of resources to help them understand how to apply for, purchase and register for health coverage, including access to people who can help them in their community. Pennie also provides financial assistance to eligible people, which means health care coverage is more affordable for Pennsylvanians. Now, more Pennsylvanians can access the care they deserve, ultimately giving more people the chance to lead healthier lives. “
Governor Wolf was joined by Philadelphia Mayor James Kenney, Antoinette Kraus, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network, Jessica Altman, Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner, and Zachary W. Sherman, Executive Director of Pennie in the Philadelphia Mayor’s Reception Hall to make the announcement.
In July 2019, Governor Wolf signed a law establishing the public market. Pennie replaces HealthCare.gov as Pennsylvania’s official destination to purchase quality health insurance plans and the only source of financial assistance to help cover the cost of coverage and care. Currently there are nearly 344,000 Pennie customers across the Commonwealth of Nations.
âNow is the time to purchase quality, low cost coverage through Pennie. Thanks to savings on American Rescue Plan premiums, coverage has never been more accessible to so many Pennsylvanians, âsaid Zachary Sherman. âNine out of 10 Pennie customers are eligible for increased value savings for low-income individuals, working families and near-retirees. Open enrollment is the opportunity for Pennsylvanians to protect their health and budget by getting the coverage they need to ensure access to care. We encourage uninsured people and anyone exploring their coverage options to visit pennie.com to register by December 15 for coverage that begins on New Years Day.
âAs open enrollment begins for the 2022 plans, it’s an important time to celebrate how far we’ve come in providing access to affordable, high-quality health care in Pennsylvania,â said Antoinette Kraus. âOver the past year and a half, Medicaid and the ACA market has proven to be a lifeline for Pennsylvanians in ensuring people maintain access to health care during a public health crisis; nearly one million Pennsylvanians are now covered by Medicaid Expansion, and over 340,000 purchase their insurance through Pennie.com.
In addition to Pennie, Governor Wolf expanded Medicaid in 2015, ensuring more Pennsylvanians have access to medical assistance in Pennsylvania. Today, more than 3,300,000 Pennsylvanians are covered by medical assistance, including nearly a million people thanks to the expansion. By expanding access to health care, the Commonwealth achieved the lowest uninsured rate in Pennsylvania history during the Wolf administration and insurance rates are now the most stable in a year to the other that they have ever been.
“We are all better off when affordable health care is available to everyone,” Governor Wolf said. âWe need to do more to ensure equity in health care in the Commonwealth and my administration will continue to fight for real equity, but expanding access to health care through Medicaid and ensuring coverage affordable through Pennie are two important steps. I encourage all Pennsylvanians in need of health insurance coverage to go to www.pennie.com to explore your options. Open registration begins today and Pennie’s team are on hand to serve you.
